"Small particles, big birthday - 70 years of CERN"

18 October 2024

To mark the 70th anniversary of the world's largest particle accelerator, a special programme awaits you in the ESO Supernova.

Immerse yourself in the fabulous world of particle physics with the award-winning planetarium film Phantom of the Universe and a lecture by Prof. Dr. Stephan Paul and Dr. Dominik Ecker. The event will take place on 28 November at 19:00 in the planetarium. Tickets cost 6.50 euros per person and can be booked now.

How did our Universe come into being? What is it made of? And is there a theory of everything that describes it all? For 70 years, researchers at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva have been exploring these fundamental questions of humanity. We celebrate this anniversary and the great discoveries of particle physics with a planetarium show and talk under the planetarium dome.

The evening begins with the film Phantom of the Universe. It tells the exciting story of the search for dark matter, from the Big Bang to its indirect detection in the Universe and in laboratory experiments like those conducted at CERN. Following the film, Munich physicists Prof. Stephan Paul and Dr. Dominik Ecker will share insights from the cutting-edge research at CERN.

What were the groundbreaking discoveries so far? How exactly do their experiments at CERN work? And... how much coffee do particle physicists really drink? At the end of the event, you will have the opportunity to ask the researchers questions and engage in discussions with them.

The ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre will open 30 minutes before the start of the event, offering participants the opportunity to visit the permanent exhibition The Living Universe.
