Virtual guide now available for exhibition visitors

30 July 2021

While guided tours are temporarily suspended, the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre has created a new, virtually guided experience, to facilitate the self-exploration and deeper understanding of The Living Universe exhibition.

The virtual tours of the exhibition are based on short and entertaining YouTube videos that provide context and up-to-date information on the themes of the exhibition. Designed with both a young and adult audience in mind and presented by one of the ESO Supernova team, the short films explain topics such as dark matter, black holes, stars and many others. Visitors will be able to access the video commentary on their mobile device, by using the QR codes placed in the relevant locations of the exhibitions. The videos are in German, with subtitles in both English and German. Look out for the posters around the exhibition. We would recommend you bring some headphones with you so you can hear the videos well, but since there are also subtitles available on each clip you can also watch without sound.

The Living Universe exhibition is currently open for visits, but online advance booking for free tickets is required and possible at https://supernova.eso.org/programme/calendar/category/tours/. Visitors who purchase a ticket for one of the planetarium shows also have the opportunity to explore our exhibition on the same morning or afternoon, without additional booking online.

For the audience at home, we recommend accessing the recorded tours available on our YouTube channel, to get a taste of our permanent exhibition.

The ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre

The ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre is a cooperation between the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). The building is a donation from the Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), a German foundation, and ESO runs the facility.
