After work at ESO Supernova

New: extended opening hours monthly on Fridays

10 January 2025

From February 2025 until May 2025, on the first Friday of the month, the ESO Supernova has extended opening hours until 20:00.

Why not start your weekend with a visit to the ESO Supernova after work on a Friday evening. During "100 Days of Planetarium", the ESO Supernova will stay open until 20:00 on the first Friday of each month.

Two planetarium shows will be scheduled each evening, the first at 17:00 and the second at 18:30. Many of these will be shows which do not feature in the standard programme and which demonstrate the versatility of the planetarium.

Starting on Friday 7 February, at 17:00 you can watch Oasis in Space, the latest addition to the ESO Supernova planetarium programme. At 18:30 there will be a showing of the film 100 Years of Eternity, which has been specially produced to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the planetarium.

On 7 March, at 17:00, dive into the world of Mayan Archaeoastronomy. In this beautifully animated show, produced in Mexico, discover the importance of the orientations of six Mayan temples in relation to the movement of the stars, the Moon and Venus. At 18:30 Planets 360 - Modern Edition will be shown - a condensed re-interpretation of British composer Gustav Holst's The Planets orchestral suite. Delivered with electronic music, the rich artistic visualisations include mythological characters, science fiction themes and real imagery of planetary bodies.

On Friday 4 April, at 17:00, a fictional spaceship takes us as passengers on a fantastic journey to the planets of our solar system in Space Opera. This showing will be in English and the film offers a total experience in a mixture of science, philosophy, music and art. At 18:30 join our Education Coordinator for a live show presenting the Spring Night Sky. Discover which astronomical objects and events will be visible on the sky in the coming months.

On Friday 2 May, enjoy an extended version of one of our most popular shows The Planets - Expedition into the Solar System at 17:00. With 20 minutes of extra footage, the film introduces more information about our Solar System and even takes you to a possible exoplanet. And at 18:30 there is another opportunity to watch 100 Years of Eternity.

All planetarium shows on Friday evenings cost the usual 6,50 Euro per person and last ca. 1 hour each. It is recommended to book in advance.

In addition to the planetarium shows, the exhibitions of the ESO Supernova will be available to explore, free of charge.
