Angesichts der aktuellen Sammlung riesiger Teleskope und der beeindruckenden wissenschaftlichen Bilanz ist es kaum zu glauben, dass die ESO nur mit einem kleinen Observatorium begann. Rückblende in die 1960er-Jahre!
Geburt in Leiden: Zu Beginn des Jahres 1954 unterschrieben zwölf europäische Astronomen die „Leiden-Erklärung“. Das war die Geburtsstunde der ESO.

Chilenischer Gipfel: Cinchado Nord - später in La Silla umbenannt - war nur ein unfruchtbarer Gipfel, als er im Mai 1964 als Ort für das erste ESO-Observatorium ausgesucht wurde.

Nach der Gründung der ESO im Jahr 1962 dauerte es fast vier Jahre, bis das erste kleine Teleskop sein "erstes Licht" sah, wie Astronomen die Erstnutzung eines Teleskops nennen. Aber das La-Silla-Observatorium wuchs stetig und im Jahr 1999 wurde schließlich das Very Large Telescope am Paranal eingeweiht. Weitere Staaten traten der ESO bei und im Jahr 2003 wurde die Organisation Partner des internationalen ALMA-Observatoriums. In nicht allzu ferner Zukunft wird das Extremely Large Telescope die Beobachtungen auf dem Cerro Armazones aufnehmen.
Klassische Schönheit: Das 3,6-Meter-Teleskop der ESO auf La Silla war bei seiner Einweihung im Jahr 1976 eines der größten der Welt.

Riesiges Auge: Im Mai 1998 sah das erste der vier 8,2-Meter- Einzelteleskope des VLT sein erstes Licht auf dem Cerro Paranal.

Hoch hinaus: Mehr als 5000 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel liegt der Llano de Chajnantor, die Heimat von ALMA - dem Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array.
