Online Seminar for Teachers: Dark Matter

18 October 2024

Are you a physics teacher looking to deepen your understanding of Dark Matter and bring cutting-edge science into the classroom? Come and join this online seminar brought to you by ESO, CERN and ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics.

On and around October 31st, 2024, the world will celebrate the historic hunt for the unseen — something that scientists refer to as Dark Matter. ESO, in collaboration with CERN in Geneva and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics in Australia, is organising an online teacher training seminar on Dark Matter and how this fascinating topic can be adapted to the classroom.

The seminar will take place via Zoom on October 30, 2024 from 10:30 - 12:00 CET and will be available as a video afterwards. The training combines astronomical evidence for Dark Matter and the search for it via particle physics and provide an overview of education resources and curriculum links.

Dark Matter is one of the most mysterious substances in the Universe and is said to make up 27% of our Universe. Its effect on observable matter and light has been detected for many decades, but so far there are no clues as to what this Dark Matter is made of. There are various hypotheses about the nature and composition of Dark Matter, but to date no measurement has been able to detect a Dark Matter particle - the search continues and is therefore an exciting topic for school lessons.

Please register for the webinar via this link: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1458036/

Since the capacity of Zoom webinars is limited, please make sure to register. We will share the link to the Zoom webinar with all registered participants on 28 Oct. The seminar will be held in English.
