Discover galactic secrets with Kosmisches Kino
— The October edition of our talk series will reveal how astronomers are decoding the nature of galaxies
6 September 2024
Join us on 10 October at 19:00 for the next astronomy talk from our series Kosmisches Kino, titled: “What does the light of distant galaxies tell us?”. You can already secure your seat for this German-language event.
Galaxies, made up of hundreds of billions of stars, shine as islands of light in the cosmic darkness. The immense distances of space render them inaccessible, and yet we are now able to uncover their secrets. How is this possible? The answer lies in modern telescopes and the light they capture from these remote objects, as Eva Sextl from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich will explain in the upcoming talk of Kosmisches Kino.
But astronomers face numerous challenges when observing galactic light. For example, techniques to study the light of a single star to unveil its chemical composition, temperature, age, size, and even fate, have been known since the end of the 19th century. But how do you study the light from billions of stars combined? Or how can scientists see starlight that is dimmed by thick galactic dust clouds on its journey to us? And how do they distinguish the shimmering of a star from a glowing cloud of hydrogen gas at gigantic distances? To know the answers, come under the dome of our planetarium and attend this Kosmisches Kino talk.
The event will run for approximately one hour and feature full-dome planetarium visualisations. It is aimed at people aged 12 years and over and will be in German. Tickets cost 6.50 euro per person and can be purchased here.
The lecture series Kosmisches Kino is a collaboration between ESO and the ORIGINS Excellence Cluster and it explores research topics at the forefront of astronomical knowledge. The ORIGINS Excellence Cluster combines astrophysics, particle physics and biophysics to investigate the formation of the Universe and the origin of life.
