Public Talks in September
8 August 2024
What can we learn from the space between galaxies? And how do First Nations people read the stars?
Cosmic Voids – What can we learn from the space between galaxies?
In our first public talk in September, Nico Schuster from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) will take us on a journey into the empty regions of the Universe. In this „Kosmisches Kino“ on Thursday 12 September 2024, he gives an overview of the largest structures in our Universe and their special importance for modern research.
The lecture series Kosmisches Kino is a collaboration between ESO and the ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence and presents current research topics. The ORIGINS Excellence Cluster combines astrophysics, particle physics and biophysics to investigate the formation of the Universe and the origin of life.
The First Astronomers: How First Nations People Read the Stars
One week later, on Thursday 19 September 2024, Melanie Kaasinen, an Australian astronomer at ESO, will share how the observational skills, and memory techniques of First Nations people around the world, have led to a rich scientific knowledge base. The knowledge she is sharing is publicly available and was willingly shared by indigenous elders, especially in Australia, in collaboration with academics working on cultural astronomy and anthropology.
Admission to the approximately one-hour-long evening events costs 6.50 Euros per person. Both events will be in German.
