Destruction of a planetary system

A supernova explosion produces X-rays and blast waves of fast particles that could render a planet like Earth uninhabitable if the explosion happened in our immediate galactic neighbourhood. This artist's impression demonstrates that a planetary system could never survive the supernova explosion of its parent star.
