ESO Council gives green light for ELT construction

At their meeting on 3 December 2014, ESO’s main governing body, the Council, gave the green light to the construction of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) in two phases. For the first phase, the spending of around one billion euro has been authorised, which will cover the construction costs of a fully working telescope with a suite of powerful instruments.
