The Oort cloud

The Oort cloud, named after Dutch astronomer Jan Oort, is a cloud of rocks and ice that orbits the Sun at a distance more than a thousand times the orbit of the Earth. It is believed that comets which travel through the Solar System and past Earth come from this region.
