A view of Mars from space

Mars is the second smallest planet in the Solar System after Mercury, with a diameter half of the Earth’s. Due to its red colour it is easily to find with the naked eye and was already known to the Old Babylonians. The Romans named the planet after their god of war — Mars — because of its red colour.
