ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
20 December 2021

Dear educators and others interested in the education programme of ESO Supernova!

Another challenging year for all of us is coming to an end, during which ESO’s education programme had to adapt to the ever-changing situation and regulations, so that we unfortunately had to cancel or postpone many school and kindergarten visits to ESO Supernova, for which we are very sorry. However, we have received a lot of encouragement, support and understanding from you for the measures and actions we have taken, for which we would like to thank you very much.

Although we were only able to offer our education programme for about half a year in 2021, more than 2000 students and more than 300 teachers visited us. Since on-site training was not possible, we shifted it to virtual space and were able to work with more than 240 teachers on how to bring current (astronomical) research and fundamental scientific knowledge into educational institutions. We will continue to offer the virtual training courses next year and announce them here in the newsletters. The topics are not yet determined, so you are welcome to make suggestions. Please send them to education@eso.org where we will collect the suggestions. Thank you very much!

For now, the ESO Supernova operates under 2G+ rules. Assuming the same rules will be in force during the first months of the next year, we released a limited number of tickets for each planetarium show. The schedule of planetarium shows during the week has not yet been finalised. However, as usual we will be offering Wednesday to Friday at 10:30am and at 3:30pm a one hour show if you would like to come and visit us with your group. At the moment we are only allowed to fill 25% of the seats, which is 27 seats. If restrictions are relaxed, we will add some more and let you know in a newsletter or on our social media channels.

We, at ESO Supernova, are also looking forward to the holiday season and to 2022 and hope that we can again offer our full education programme, including workshops, and on-site trainings. However, because of reaching a broader audience, we will continue to also offer virtual training and one-hour virtual tours of our telescopes in Chile (if you are interested, please send a request via education@eso.org).

Happy holidays and we hope to see you soon!

Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
