ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
5 July 2021

Dear educators and others interested in the educational programme of ESO Supernova!

In this newsletter you will find updates about school and kindergarten visits to the ESO Supernova and a virtual physics/astronomy training for teachers in Bavaria, Germany.

Now that the COVID-19 situation has improved and cinemas & theatres are open again, we have also reopened the ESO Supernova incl. planetarium for school groups in the context of out-of-school activities.

However, we remain cautious and continue to apply our established hygiene and safety measures. In the entire building, i.e. also in the planetarium, distance to people from other households must be kept and a mask must be worn. Visits of the exhibition are possible by prior booking, but we cannot offer guided tours due to the distance requirement. However, self-exploration is possible without problems and with a lot of fun even while wearing a mask.

Planetarium shows are currently published only one week in advance so that we can react promptly to changes of the COVID-19 situation. However, we can make a reservation for a later date for your school class or kindergarten group. If the pupils are allowed to sit in the planetarium without spacing, like in the classroom, we would need a written confirmation of this from your headmaster. Otherwise, unfortunately, only 19 people will fit in the planetarium.

Just send us an email and we will try to accommodate your wishes.

For Bavarian teachers, the office of the Ministerialbeauftragter für die Gymnasien in der Oberpfalz offers a virtual teacher training (in German only) “Die Physik Nobelpreise 2019 und 2020 als Impulse für Astronomie im Unterricht” delivered by ESO Supernova. The training will take place online on 13.07.2021 from 14:00 to 16:30, is free of charge and can be booked via FIBS (course M043-0/21/334). Registrations are still possible until 10.07.2021.

Thank you for your continued support. We would be happy to welcome you at ESO Supernova.

Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
