ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
22 October 2024

Dear education professionals and those interested in the educational programme of ESO Supernova!

On and around October 31st, 2024, the world will celebrate the historic hunt for the unseen—something that scientists refer to as Dark Matter. Because of that ESO, in collaboration with CERN and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics, is celebrating the "Dark Matter Day" by offering an online training seminar on the topic of “Dark Matter”. The online seminar will take place on October 30, 2024 via Zoom from 10:30 - 12:00 (CET) and the recording will be available afterwards. It is focused on astronomical evidence for Dark Matter (ESO) and the search for this substance using particle physics (ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics) and provides an overview of education resources and links to the curricula (CERN).

Dark matter is not only an exciting topic for science but it can also be used in a very motivating way in the classroom - this seminar explains how this can be implemented.

Please register via this link: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1458036/

Since the capacity of Zoom webinars is limited, please make sure to register. We will share the link to the Zoom webinar with all registered participants on 28 Oct. The seminar will be held in English.

We are receiving a lot of requests about the education programme for the next calendar year. We will have finished planning the ESO Supernova program for January to July 2025 in the course of November 2024. We ask for your patience until then. As soon as bookings for 2025 are possible, we will publish this on our website (https://supernova.eso.org/education/) and in another newsletter.

We would be delighted if you could visit the ESO Supernova with your kindergarten group or school class before Christmas. We are open until December 22nd and will start the new year on January 4th. The educational program is still free of charge.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
