ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
5 February 2024

Dear educators and others interested in the educational programme of ESO Supernova!

We hope you had a good start into the New Year and wish you all the best for 2024.

We used most of the time in January at ESO Supernova for maintenance work of the building, the exhibition and the planetarium so that we are once again perfectly prepared for your visit. The biggest change you will notice happened in the planetarium, as we have installed new and more comfortable seats. Just book a planetarium ticket and try them out.

Regarding education, we will soon be establishing a new additional service: Together with the Forscherstation Heidelberg, a Material Library will be set up at ESO Supernova, from which you can loan boxes full of equipment (Forscherkisten) for your Kita and investigate everyday phenomena and natural phenomena with the kids.

On 19 March 2024 at 14:00, we will officially open the Forscherstation’s Material Library at ESO Supernova in Garching. From that day on, you can loan these Forscherkisten for your Kita free of charge for a time span of 14 days. This service adds on to the educator training courses for early science education and astronomy in Kitas also provided by Forscherstation.

The educator training courses and the Material Library supplement the existing free ESO Supernova education programme for Kindergartens and schools, promoting the fascination and excitement of discoveries about the universe in which we live in via workshops, exhibition tours and planetarium events.

We cordially invite you to the opening afternoon with inspiring presentations, a market of opportunities and a planetarium show. Participation in the opening event is free of charge, but places are limited. You can register here.

What: Opening of the Forscherstation’s Material Library

When: 19 March, 14:00 – 18:00.

Where: ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre, Karl-Schwarzschild-Str. 2, 85748 Garching

Registration via this link: Eröffnungsnachmittag ESO Supernova (forscherstation.info)

Best wishes - we look forward to seeing you!

Wolfgang Vieser from ESO and Katrin Schneider-Özbek from Forscherstation
