ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
18 December 2023

Dear educators and others interested in the educational programme of ESO Supernova!

As 2023 draws to a close, we are looking back on a very successful year for the ESO Supernova education programme. Over 10,000 students and over 1,000 teachers and education specialists have taken advantage of our programme this year. Thank you very much for your continued interest in ESO Supernova and your commitment to bringing science to the next generation. Our planning for the first half of 2024 is complete and bookings for the ESO Supernova education programme will be open from 18 December. The ESO Supernova will be open for you again from 31 January 2024.

Please use our booking portal for education institutions on our website: https://supernova.eso.org/education/

The most important points you should keep in mind:

  • We only offer the educational programme free of charge from Wednesday to Friday and only for kindergartens and schools (primary and secondary levels I & II).
  • The maximum group size for guided tours and workshops is 30 people.
  • We can provide a maximum of one guided tour per day. A self-guided  visit of the exhibition is always possible during our opening hours.
  • You can find out which activities take place on which day at ESO Supernova in our online calendar
  • Workshops can only take place on the days listed in the booking portal.
  • Even if you "only" want to visit a planetarium show, please use also the booking portal, as this is the only way to guarantee free admission. Make sure there are enough free seats in the planetarium for your group. If there is no show in the programme on your preferred date, we can usually schedule a show at 9:30 am, 11:00 am, 2:00 pm or 3:30 pm.

From March, we will once again be offering the free 5-part training series "Sonne, Mond und Sterne" in German for educators in collaboration
with Forscherstation Heidelberg. You can find out more here.

We wish you a happy festive season, to find time for a rest and a happy new year. We would be delighted if you would visit the ESO Supernova next year with your kindergarten group or school class. The educational programme is still free of charge.

Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
