Dear educators and others interested in the educational programme of ESO Supernova!

The new school year has started or is about to start, so we wish you all the best for this school term.

First, a brief look back: In the first half of 2023, we welcomed a total of more than 5000 participants of ESO Supernova’s education programme. We are very pleased that this programme with a visit of a planetarium show, a guided tour and workshop continues to be so popular. However, the demand far exceeds what we can offer, so we cannot provide a guided tour or workshop to everyone who requests one. Nevertheless, a planetarium show can be offered to most, and a visit to the exhibition on your own is possible for everyone.

For the second half of 2023, we put two new planetarium shows for older pupils in the programme: "5000 Eyes: Mapping the Universe with DESI" and "Black Hole: The First Image". The former deals with the topic of cosmology and the methods used to explore the evolution of the universe, while the latter describes the story of the first image of a black hole from the perspective of two researchers. You can watch the trailers here: https://supernova.eso.org/programme/detail/es1180/ and https://supernova.eso.org/programme/detail/es1183/.

To book planetarium shows for kindergarten groups and school classes, please use our booking request form ( https://supernova.eso.org/education/ ) so that your visit remains free of charge. The same applies to requests for guided tours and workshops. Workshops can only take place on the days mentioned in the booking form. Other dates are not possible for operational reasons. For the same reason, we can only offer one guided tour per day. We cannot guide groups of more than 30 people through the exhibition. As a professional educator, you are aware of the decreasing attention when the group size becomes too big.

We are pleased to welcome Urša Benedičič to the ESO Supernova team as our new Education Specialist in the field of early childhood education. She has recently started working in our collaboration with the Forscherstation Heidelberg, so that we will be able to offer trainings for educators and primary school teachers in the course of the year. More details will be available soon in a newsletter and on our website.

We would be delighted if you would come along to ESO Supernova with your kindergarten group or school class. The educational programme is still free of charge.

Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
