ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
20 September 2021

Dear educators and others interested in the educational programme of ESO Supernova!

We hope you had a good start into the new school term and wish you all the best for the coming season. We would like to support you in bringing current science and technologies into the classroom and therefore offer a virtual teacher training on "Infrared Astronomy" together with colleagues from the Deutsches SOFIA Institut (DSI). In contrast to ESO, which points its telescopes with a primary mirror of up to 8.20m towards the sky from solid ground, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) observes the universe from aboard a Boeing 747. Which objects are studied and which challenges need to be mastered is also part of the two-day training on 15 & 16 October 2021. More information and registration here.

In addition, you still have until 30 September 2021 to apply for the Reiff Prize. The Reiff Foundation for the Promotion of Amateur and School Astronomy is calling for applications for awards for youth work in amateur astronomy and astronomical projects at school and kindergarten. This year again, four cash awards worth a total of 6500 Euro will be handed out in two categories. You can find more details here.

Thank you for your continued interest and we are looking forward to welcoming you at ESO Supernova in near future.

Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
