Dear education professionals and those interested in the education programme of ESO Supernova!
The first half of 2025 is almost over and the long school holidays are just around the corner. This year, we have already welcomed more than 6,000 pupils from over 150 secondary schools and around 80 primary schools and kindergartens who have taken advantage of ESO's free educational programme. Even though the majority of the groups come from the local area, a quarter of the schools travelled more than 100 km to visit the ESO Supernova. This included school groups from Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, the UK, Finland, Portugal, Chile and Australia. Thank you for your continued interest in astronomy, technology and the European Southern Observatory. Since we are only a small team, we can only plan our offer 6 months in advance, but now the dates are bookable until the end of 2025. Based on our experience, teachers are looking for excursion destinations shortly after the start of school (field trips) and before the Christmas holidays and we are booked up very quickly during these periods. We therefore recommend that you’re booking your visit via our website well in advance. In most cases, we can offer planetarium shows at 9.30 am, 11.00 am, 2.00 pm and 3.30 pm, even if no shows have yet been entered in our online calendar. We can only offer guided tours for one class per day. If you already see a guided tour in the online calendar on the day of your visit, no further guided tours are possible. You can find the dates for workshops on the website for educational institutions, where you can also make a booking enquiry.
On 22 July, we invite primary school teachers and educators of Kindergartens to a free evening event at the ESO Supernova!
As part of an interactive evening, we will be presenting our educational programmes in the field of early science education. Find out what your class can discover with us free of charge - and what support you can receive as a specialist: from practical material boxes to a wide range of further training courses. In addition to exciting insights into our work, you have the opportunity to exchange ideas and join us on a fascinating journey through the universe in our planetarium.
Participation is free of charge! However, please register at the following link: https://forms.gle/jHEdg1DSjVJKCQvx8.
The event starts at 17:00 and ends at around 19:30.
We look forward to a stimulating evening with you!
If you’re interested in competitions then have a closer look at this year's International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition. This is an educational astronomy competition open to students from around the world. In three rounds, students use their problem-solving skills and expand their knowledge through diverse astronomy and astrophysics problems. This year's prizes include telescopes signed by the astronaut Frank De Winne and Nobel Prize laureates François Englert, Michel Mayor, Gerard 't Hooft and Didier Queloz. The submission deadline for this year's Qualification Round is Friday, 4 July 2025. Resources such as problem sets, flyers, and posters can be accessed on the website: https://iaac.space.
Best wishes,
Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
