ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Education Newsletter
13 December 2024

Dear education professionals and those interested in the education programme of ESO Supernova!

The year 2024 is drawing to a close. This is a good time to look back on the past year and also throw a glance at 2025. Last year, we welcomed almost 12,000 kids and teenagers from Kindergarten, primary and secondary schools to the ESO Supernova education programme. This figure marks a new record and shows that the interest in astronomical topics is unbroken and that our programme is still attractive. Thank you for your visits, your interest in astronomy and technology and your commitment as educators and teachers to inspiring the next generation with these topics. If you have already taken part in our education programme and enjoyed it, we would be delighted to receive a positive review on our social media channels.

Also next year we are offering our free education programme with planetarium shows, guided tours and workshops during the school term from Wednesday to Friday. Bookings can now be made via the website for education institutions for dates until the end of July. We can offer planetarium shows at 9.30am, 11am, 2pm and 3.30pm in most cases, even if there are no shows in the online calendar yet. We can only offer guided tours for one class per day, as our team is limited in numbers. Nevertheless, we were able to conduct almost 100 guided tours last year. If you spot a guided tour in the online calendar on the day of your visit, no further tours are possible. There are also dates for possible workshops indicated on the website for education institutions. If there are ‘No dates available’, we can no longer offer you a workshop for this school term.

For Kindergarten, we are again offering a multi-session training course in cooperation with the Forscherstation from mid-March on. Please register via this link: https://supernova.eso.org/germany/education/teacher-training/future/

Another offer for Kindergarten is our materials library, where you can borrow material boxes with learning environments for your institution free of charge - consulting included! You can find more information here:
https://www.forscherstation.info/angebote/beratung-und-materialausleihe/materialbibliothek-garching

For secondary schools, we are offering a training course running over several days at the beginning of July in cooperation with the Excellence Cluster Origins. Registrations can be made via FIBS:

The ESO Supernova will be open for the last time this year on 22 December and will then take its winter break. We will be back for you from Saturday 4 January on. We wish you and your families a wonderful festive season and a peaceful end to the year.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang Vieser (Education Coordinator)
