ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
8 August 2024

Dear Visitors and Supporters,

September will be an exciting month in the ESO Supernova, with three special evening events planned. We hope you can join us for them.

First, on Thursday 12 September, we continue with our Kosmisches Kino series and a talk from Nico Schuster, LMU, about cosmic voids – although technically empty regions of space, these areas can tell us so much about the Universe.

On Thursday 19 September we have a public talk from Melanie Kaasinen, ESO, about the indigenous knowledge of the skies of the First Nations people of Australia. In her talk, Melanie will provide examples of how First Nations people read the stars, the many layers of information that they uncovered, and how they are still leading to new scientific discoveries.

And, on Saturday 21 September, we are delighted to host local band Saroos in the planetarium. Saroos will bring their original sounds to the dome, accompanied by breath-taking fulldome visuals.

Don’t forget that we have two shows added to our programme of exciting planetarium shows. Both Solar Superstorms and Dynamic Earth are loaded with fascinating information and stunning visuals, all based on real science and supercomputer simulations.

Read more about all of these events in the articles below.

We look forward to welcoming you in the ESO Supernova and thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.

Best wishes

Tania Johnston

Head of ESO Supernova
