ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
28 November 2022

Dear visitors and supporters,

To end 2022, we have two exciting events for you. Firstly, on the evening of Friday 2 December, to celebrate ESO’s 60th anniversary, we will present a live streamed virtual tour of the observatories in Chile . The event will be in English and is free of charge. Be sure to book your place in advance online . Then, the following week, on Thursday 8 December, we are delighted to host an event which has been organised by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft: “Die lange Nacht der Astronominnen ”. This event will consist of short talks by four female astronomers, followed by a deeper discussion moderated by Sybille Anderl. Tickets cost 10 Euro per person and can be bought online here .

Perhaps you’re looking for some gifts to buy your loved ones for Christmas at this time of year. In this case, we’d like to remind you of our online ESO shop, where you can buy the 2023 ESO Calendar and merchandise with beautiful astronomical images, like this mug or this bag made from recycled plastic bottles . You can also buy vouchers for planetarium tickets online here. Of course, you can also buy products in the ESO Supernova shop during our standard opening hours. Please note that when buying items meant as Christmas gifts in our online shop, we recommend placing your orders by 16 December at the very latest.

The ESO Supernova will close from Monday 19 December and reopen on Wednesday 4 January 2023 and we look forward to welcoming our visitors again in the New Year. Our planetarium programme for January – March 2023 is now bookable online.

Many thanks for all your support over 2022. It has been wonderful to welcome so many of you again in the ESO Supernova after some challenging years. We wish you and your families a very pleasant winter and holiday season.

Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
