ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
13 January 2026

Dear Visitors and Supporters,

We hope you had a great start to the new year and wish you all the best, good health, and success in 2026. Starting Saturday, January 17, the ESO Supernova will reopen its doors, and we've put together a packed programme.

In February, we're offering music, a scientific talk, and not one, but two special live planetarium shows!

Our first special event in February is the annual MPE event, "Women in Astronomy." This year, Dr. Dominika Wylezalek will be giving a talk on black holes and galaxy formation. This event is free, but don't forget to book your ticket! To find out more about this event, please read our press release.

On Friday, February 6, we continue our monthly "After Work Fridays" at the ESO Supernova. You can enjoy a special planetarium show about the epic journey of the Voyager 1 mission. Tickets cost 6,50 Euro per person, and the show is recommended for ages 10 and up. Book your tickets here.

For those who would like to spend a romantic Valentine's Day evening at the ESO Supernova, we have prepared a special planetarium show about the life of the stars. There will be two performances of this show on Saturday, February 14, and tickets can be booked online now. Read more about the show here.

And we are delighted to welcome the Vienna-based band Alpha Trianguli to the planetarium on Friday, February 27. Prepare to be transported to other worlds with the space-inspired music of this quartet. Tickets cost €20 per person. Further information about this concert can be found in our press release.

All these activities take place during extended opening hours, meaning four different opportunities to visit ESO Supernova in the evenings this February! Even if you don't wish to attend one of the special planetarium events on a particular evening, you are welcome to visit the free exhibition. And of course, we continue to offer our standard programme, with a variety of planetarium shows from Wednesday to Sunday. We have already scheduled several planetarium shows for Carnival, Easter, and Pentecost school holidays. Just one thing to remember: ESO Supernova is closed on the last full weekend of each month.

We hope to see you again soon at ESO Supernova!

Best wishes
Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
