ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
10 December 2025

Dear visitors and supporters,

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued trust, commitment and support in 2025. It has been a wonderful and busy year, in which we have offered you over 650 planetarium shows, 13 talks, 4 concerts and many other activities.

As 2025 draws to a close, there is still time to visit the ESO Supernova before it closes for the festive season. The ESO Supernova remains open until Sunday 21 December. Don’t forget that we are open until 20:00 on Thursday 11 December and there are still tickets left for the special live show about infrared astronomy and the planetarium show about Mayan Archaeoastronomy. Or, simply come by to visit our exhibition.

In case you did not yet buy all your Christmas presents, there are a few great ideas in the ESO Shop online or here directly at ESO Supernova. The 2026 ESO Calendar has beautiful astronomical images for the whole year or the new ELT holographic magnet would make a great stocking-filler. Brand new ESO t-shirts are also available to buy online in a variety of sizes. Why not treat your friends and family to a voucher for a planetarium show in the ESO Supernova? Please note that when buying items meant as Christmas gifts in our online shop, we recommend placing your orders by 16 December at the very latest. Our team will be processing online shop orders until 12:00 on Friday 19 December 2025. Any orders placed between 20 December 2025, and 11 January 2026 will not be shipped until 12 January 2026 at the earliest. Of course, you can also buy products in the ESO Supernova shop during our standard opening hours, until 17:00 on Sunday 21 December 2025.

Next year, ESO is offering school students the possibility to participate in a one or two week long internship. So, if you know any school pupils in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade who are passionate about astronomy, please direct them to our press release to find out more.

The ESO Supernova reopens on Saturday 17 January 2026 and the programme for the first half of 2026 is online and bookable now.

ESO wishes you and your loved ones a very pleasant winter holiday season https://www.eso.org/public/holiday25/. The team of the ESO Supernova looks forward to sharing more wonders of astronomy with you in 2026.

Best wishes
Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
