ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
11 August 2025

Dear Visitors and Supporters,

We start this newsletter with some exciting news: Germany’s planetariums have been officially recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. What an honour! This comes during the special year, 100 years after the first planetarium opened its doors to the public, right here in Bavaria, at the Deutsches Museum. We congratulate all our fellow planetariums in Germany! Read more about this UNESCO recognition in the press release.

To continue contributing to this vibrant planetarium community in Germany, and to ensure we maintain a varied offer of activities for you astronomy-lovers is a real pleasure for us, and we are excited to share with you the planned activities for September.

On Friday 5 September, we continue with our After Work series, and are happy to offer at 17:00 a special compilation of short planetarium shows especially for primary school children. This compilation Science for children will be shown various times during the final two weeks of the Bavarian summer holidays. Find out more about what awaits you in our press release. At 18:30 on 5 September, we offer the latest show in our programme: Worlds Beyond Earth. If you haven’t yet seen this wonderful show, why not plan an evening at ESO Supernova?

The nationwide Long Night of Astronomy takes places again this year, on Saturday 13 September, and of course, the ESO Supernova is also taking part. Last year, this event was extremely successful and we have prepared an equally interesting programme for you. The entire programme from 18:30 to 23:00 is free of charge, but the activities taking place in the planetarium require a prior booking. Read all about the event here.

And, Kosmisches Kino starts again after the summer break on Thursday 18 September. This month’s event will be in English, with Francesca Capel from the Max Planck Institute for Physics. Francesca will take us on a journey into the world of cosmic particles. Read more about the event here.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our events in September. Many thanks for your continued support!

Best wishes
Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
