ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
9 May 2025

Dear Visitors and Supporters,

The ESO Supernova thoroughly enjoyed participating in the worldwide celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the planetarium, which are coming to an end this week. On 7 May, planetariums around the world held special events and the International Planetarium Society hosted a live streamed event on YouTube, which included a special message also from the Director General of ESO. You can watch the recording here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbaaGFQhWTU. Until Sunday 11 May, you can still see the temporary exhibition on the history of the planetarium on the ground floor of ESO Supernova.

Bookings are now open for the planetarium shows for the rest of 2025. Weekend shows and also planetarium shows during the Bavarian school holidays are now in the programme and tickets can be booked immediately.

Kosmisches Kino continues on Thursday 12 June, with a talk about star formation from astronomer Stefan Heigl. This event will be in German and you can read more about it here.

We are happy to continue our later opening hours once per month for the rest of 2025. Each of the Friday “After Work” sessions were fully booked so far, so don’t miss your chance to get tickets for the next one on Friday 6 June. At 17:00 “Oasis in Space” will be shown, and at 18:30 we show “Birth of Planet Earth”.

Many thanks for your support and enthusiasm.

Best wishes
Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
