ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
11 April 2025

Dear visitors and supporters,

Already this year we have welcomed around 15000 of you wonderful astronomy enthusiasts and we are looking forward to welcoming more of you over the coming months. Thank you so much for your continued support.

7 May marks a special date in the history of planetariums. 100 years ago on this date, in 1925, the first public planetarium opened its doors, right here in Bavaria. For the past 100 years, planetariums around the world have been fascinating people and immersing them in the Universe. To celebrate this special occasion, on the evening of 7 May, there will be a special 90 minute show in the planetarium. Read all about this show in our news item.

In addition to this special event, the next Kosmisches Kino will take place on Thursday, 8 May. This month, Dr Frederick Groth will cover the topic of galaxy clusters. Full details of the event – which will be in English – can be found here.

And, finally, there are still tickets left for our May edition of “After Work at ESO Supernova” on Friday 2 May. At 17:00 we will show the extended version of “Planets – Expedition into the Solar System” and, at 18:30 we show “100 Years of Eternity”, a special show produced to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the planetarium. And, of course, even if you don’t have tickets for the planetarium shows, you are very welcome to visit our exhibitions. The temporary exhibition about the history of planetariums is still on show in the ground floor until 11 May.

We look forward to welcoming you at one of our events!

Best wishes,
Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
