ESO — Reaching New Heights in Astronomy
ESO Supernova Public Newsletter
10 January 2025

A very happy and healthy new year to all our supporters and visitors!

There is so much to look forward to at ESO Supernova in the coming months!

From 28 January we are marking the 100th anniversary of the planetarium, with “100 days of Planetarium”. On Wednesday 29 January, you can watch a special planetarium show “100 Years of Eternity” which takes you on a journey that begins with the early cultures of mankind and leads through an ever-changing view of the heavens to the modern star theatre. In addition, there will be a freely accessible temporary special exhibition on the history of the planetarium on display on the ground floor of ESO Supernova. Throughout these 100 Days of Planetarium, on the first Friday of each month, the ESO Supernova will remain open until 20:00, giving you more hours to be fascinated by the Universe. Keep your eyes open for more news about special activities throughout these 100 days leading up to the official “birthday” of the planetarium on 7 May.

In February we have two great scientific events for you. First, to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, on Thursday 6 February, Dr. Hannah Übler will give a talk about studying the first billion years after the Big Bang. And then, on Thursday 13 February we continue our Kosmisches Kino series, with Dr. Steffen Hagstotz, who will tell us about the largest structures in the Universe. With both of these events, instead of closing as normal at 17:00, the ESO Supernova remains open throughout until the end of the event. Watch a planetarium show before and explore our exhibition at your leisure.

And, if you don’t yet have plans for Valentine’s Day, why not treat your loved one to a visit to ESO Supernova. On the evening of Friday 14 February, we offer a special event in the planetarium, featuring a series of beautiful short films combining art and science.

We very much look forward to welcoming you at the ESO Supernova during 2025!

Best wishes
Tania Johnston
Head of ESO Supernova
